The Root of Evil, 2018

This painting is inspired by the verse I Timothy 6:10 (KJV) which states, “For the love of money is the root of all evil:  which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”  This painting expresses the negative impacts of loving money above all, and the oppression it induces on society. The adult character is depicted “loving money” as much as a child would love their favorite stuffed animal.  The artist blends several symbolic images throughout the painting.  The person does not actually exist, however derived from several forms of reference.  The colors and exaggerated gestures were very deliberate, which aids in the overall meaning of the painting.  The artist’s goal is for the viewer to consider their own attachment to money and understand the consequences of an unhealthy relationship with it.
