Abstract in combination with realism were the techniques of choice to create this painting. The red in the background draws the eye to the contour of the face. The subject gazes directly into the viewer’s eyes and seems to follow them as they move about the painting. Many classic portrait artists used this technique. The matte paint used in this painting also gives the painting a soft illustrative quality. The intensity of the expression suggests that challenges are no match.
