The Burden of Truth is a conceptual painting that the artist uses to express a viewpoint. The heaviness of the subject matter seemed to affect Harris during the creative process. “I was very concerned about how this painting would be received, however I resolved that speaking one’s truth carries its own burden at times.” Harris seeks to be socially conscious while careful not to become editorial. There is a connection to each topic that Harris decides to paint and elements within the painting that have dual meaning. This particular painting explores the reality of the person of color and the daily struggles of navigating the world, while strategically using composition, scale, and symbolism to tell her story.
